Somos Kicks Off 20th Anniversary Event Series with Pulitzer Prize Winning Author of Enrique's Journey Sonia Nazario

October 8, 2015

SANTA FE, NM- On Thursday, Somos Un Pueblo Unido will be kicking off a series of events celebrating its 20 years of organizing for worker and civil rights in New Mexico. Pulitzer Prize- winning author of the best selling book Enrique's Journey, Sonia Nazario will be speaking at the New Mexico History Museum.

Nazario is an award-winning author and journalist whose work focuses on issues of immigration and human rights. Her book, Enrique's Journey, follows a Honduran teenager on an odyssey that takes him far away from his home country in search of his mother, and a better life in the United States. Her reporting tells the story of Enrique, his family, and the countless immigrant children making similar journeys. Enrique's plight was originally published as a series of articles in the Los Angeles Times and won the Pulitzer Prize for best feature writing in 2003.

"Sonia Nazario's visit to our state comes at a crucial time," said Maria Cristina Lopez, a founding member of Somos Un Pueblo Unido. "The anti-immigrant vitriol has reached such a fevered pitch in this country and in this state our aim is to elevate the conversation about immigration."

Somos also partnered with the Santa Fe Public Schools to provide over 1,000 copies ofEnrique's Journey to middle and high schools students. On Friday, October 9th Sonia Nazario will be visiting Capital High School and speaking with students and teachers from across the school district.
