Tomorrow: Governor Anaya and Governor Richardson to Headline Talk on the Next 20 Years of Immigrants' Rights in NM;

Part of Somos Un Pueblo Unido's 20th anniversary events, Moderated by former State Historian of New Mexico Dr. Rael-Gálves

October 23, 2015

SANTA FE, NM- Somos Un Pueblo Unido will present the second of five events marking 20 years of advancing immigrant and worker rights in New Mexico this Saturday, October 24, 2015.  This panel discussion will focus on the history and future of immigration rights in New Mexico. Panel participants include two of New Mexico's former governors - Bill Richardson and Toney Anaya - as well as the Executive Director of Somos Un Pueblo Unido, Marcela Diaz.  The discussion will be moderated by scholar, writer and strategist, Dr. Estevan Rael-Gálvez, whose former positions include, State Historian of New Mexico, executive director of the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and senior vice president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

"This critical conversation will trace immigration within a historical, cultural and political frame work, said Dr. Rael-Gálvez. Ultimately, the objective of this discussion is to awaken memory and knowledge and deepen consciousness."

Both governors have played a critical role in advancing the rights of immigrants in New Mexico and across the country. From declaring New Mexico a sanctuary state to Central American refugees, to signing into law policies that allow undocumented immigrants to apply for a drivers' license and access to in-state tuition, these political figures helped transformed New Mexico into one of the most pro-immigrant states in the country.
