IMMIGRANTS' RIGHTS GROUP RESPONDS TO SENATE BREAKTHROUGH ON DRIVER'S LICENSE DEBATE

March 20, 2015

Santa Fe--In a historic vote against the governor's anti immigrant agenda, the Senate voted 35 to 5 to keep immigrant families licensed and New Mexico's roads safe. Statewide immigrants' rights organization Somos Un Pueblo Unido released the following statement after the vote.

"Today's vote for a bipartisan compromise on drivers' licenses is a real defeat for the Governor's anti-immigrant agenda and a milestone for the immigrant community in New Mexico. It is so gratifying to see both Democrats and Republicans recognize the contributions that immigrant workers make to this state and the value of our families. This was a vote for fairness and public safety and against the ugly and divisive rhetoric the Governor has made our state endure for five years. It shows that New Mexico can rise above the fear mongering and gridlock so prevalent in politics today. We applaud Senators Stuart Ingle and John Arthur Smith for boldly leading their colleagues away from the politics of fear. And we are greatly humbled by Senate and House Democrats who in the face of grave political threats over the years did not waiver, stood up for what is right, and saw light at the end of this dark tunnel."
