SANTA FE - SOMOS UN PUEBLO UNIDO IS ORGANIZING THREE ACTIONS IN CONGRESSMAN PEARCE'S
DISTRICT AS PART OF A NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTION FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM.
March 17, 2014
While New Mexico ranks last on most statistical measures of economic and social prosperity, the state ranks first in deportations. According to data issued by TRAC (Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse), an independent research group out of the University of Syracuse, 88% of immigrants detained in New Mexico are "removed," meaning they were formally deported and barred from returning to the US for years. The national average is 66%.
Congressman Pearce continues to refuse to support real and permanent solutions that would create a path to citizenship for immigrants who are an integral part of the state's economy and our local communities. The actions planned for this week will send the Congressman a strong message: as long as he continues to side with the extreme anti-immigrant wing of his caucus, immigrants families will work to hold him accountable. Hundreds of immigrant groups across the nation have organized protested during this Congressional recess.
