Highlights
- New Mexico State Legislative Memorial - In 1995, a group of immigrants and supporters in Santa Fe campaigned to pass a state legislative memorial condemning California’s passage of Proposition 187. Out of this campaign, Somos Un Pueblo Unido was born.
- Anti-discrimination Resolution - Somos initiated a campaign in 1999 to pass a City Council resolution banning city employees from asking immigrants about their immigration status and leading to a permanent city committee on immigrant affairs. Santa Fe was the sixth city in the country to create such a policy, and Somos went on to assist community groups in passing a similar resolution in Albuquerque in 2000 and in Durango, Colorado in 2004.
- No Immigrant Prison! - In 2000, Somos rallied the community to stop the opening of a for-profit segregated immigrant prison in Santa Fe. Since, Somos organizers have spoken widely to immigrant and social justice groups across the country about the ties between the booming private prison industry and immigration policy.
- ¡Licencias para Inmigrantes; Seguridad para Todos! - In 2002, Somos spearheaded and coordinated a statewide legislative campaign to pass a law making undocumented immigrants eligible for drivers’ licenses in New Mexico. More than 20,000 immigrants have since benefited, and as a result, our state’s public safety has improved.
- Greenlight New Mexico’s Future - In 2005, Somos organized another statewide effort to pass the most progressive higher education law for undocumented immigrant students in the country. New Mexico’s Senate Bill 582 allows students to access in-state tuition and state financial aid regardless of immigration status. More than 450 immigrant youth participated in this remarkable campaign.
Projects
- Immigrant Rights Center - Somos serves as northern New Mexico’s only comprehensive immigrant resource center where immigrant families can obtain information regarding rights, remedies, and available resources. Last year, more than 2000 low-income immigrant families and service providers obtained information and/or advocacy support at our office.
- Civil Rights Project - Somos provides civil rights education throughout New Mexico via know-your-rights workshops, media campaigns, and written materials. In the last five years, we have trained over 8,000 immigrants how to assert their civil rights and document law enforcement abuses. In 2005, Somos is spearheading a statewide Civil Rights Network whose aim is to document abuses throughout New Mexico and organize campaigns to reduce violations by law enforcement.
- Proyecto Vivienda Digna - Through this renter’s rights project, we provide broad community education about tenant rights and fair housing laws and we organize tenants at local apartment complexes and mobile home parks to counter abuses by unscrupulous landlords and improve overall housing conditions.
- Immigrant Policy Project - Somos members participate in and coordinate campaigns that challenge anti-immigrant policies and promote immigrant-friendly ones locally and statewide. Currently, we are working to monitor the implementation of recent state legislation improving undocumented immigrant youth access to college. We are also at the forefront of local efforts to counter the potential effects of the REAL ID Act, federal legislation that would undermine New Mexico’s immigrant driver’s license policy.
- Comité de Trabajadores Unidos (CTU) - Through Somos’ Worker’s Rights Project, a committee of immigrant workers conducts know-your-rights workshops in the community and organizes against rights abuses in the workplace. Workshops and written materials inform low-wage immigrant workers about the Santa Fe Living Wage Ordinance, social security no-match letters, worker’s compensation programs, labor protections and remedies.
