October 2, 2007 — Action Alert! DREAM Act   UpDate Join us during the New Mexico Week of DREAM Action! Keep calling Senators and collecting petitions! Amigos de Somos, As you know, we were expecting to see the DREAM Act introduced as an amendment to the Department of Defense Authorizationbill last week, but unfortunately that did not happen. A group of Republicans blocked its introduction. But not all is bad news. Senator Harry Reid (Co-sponsor of the DREAM Act and Senate Majority Leader) pledged to bring the DREAM Act to the senate floor before November 16th. What does this mean? We have about 5 weeks to make sure more people know about the DREAM Act so that they can call and participate in the statewide campaign. We are at a critical time in the campaign, so we need your help. Here’s how:

Support the DREAM Act Read the fact sheet. E-mail your Legislators Ask them to support the DREAM Act. Connect to their office e-mails here. Call your Legislators Use our website to send us your e-mail address or cell phone number or call us at 424-7832 or send us an e-mail. We'll send you action alerts for call-in days. Sign and Circulate a petition Download the petition. Spread the word. Español     PDF   o   Word English     PDF   or   Word Make a Video: Are you a student? If so, make a video to tell your story. E-mail it to Somos, we’ll post it online. Use a webcam or a digital camera, not cell phones please.

• Don’t forget to call your Senators. Ask Senators Domenici and Bingaman to vote for the DREAM Act to ensure that immigrant students have access to college and a path to legal permanent residency. Phone numbers are below.

• Sign and collect petitions. We’re trying to gather1,000 signatures by next Monday. If you are collecting petitions, please send them to Somos. If you want to start collecting them, please download them from our website: www.somosunpueblounido.org

• Participate in local events during the New Mexico Week of DREAM Action:
  • On Tuesday, October 9th at 12 PM, there will be a press conference and rally to kick off the statewide campaign. This event will be at UNM in front of the Student Union Building.

  • On Thursday, October 11th at 6:30 PM, there will be a Student Forum in Taos at Taos High School. If you live close to any of these cities, please support our youth by attending.
