September 19, 2007 — Action Alert!
The DREAM Act
Call New Mexico Senators
Sign Somos statement and petition
Somos friends,
U.S. Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL), Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) will most likely offer the DREAM Act THIS WEEK as an amendment to the Department of Defense Authorization bill (H.R. 1585). The DREAM Act would restore states' full rights to provide instate tuition and financial aid to immigrant students and it would a open a path for students who attend college for two years to obtain legal immigration status so they can fully integrate in to our country's labor force.
Somos Un Pueblo Unido has been working with student leaders and allies around the state to create awareness and support for undocumented immigrant students and the DREAM Act. The time to act is now. The amendment may be offered and voted on as soon as today, but it might not come up until next week. Either way, we should not wait to let our voice of support be heard!!!

These are the things you can do now to ensure that our Senators know how much support there is in New Mexico for the DREAM Act:
- CALL SENATORS' OFFICES (DISTRICT AND WASHINGTON) every day this week
and ask them to:

- Vote for the DREAM Act amendment to the Department of Defense Authorization bill so that immigrant students already graduating from New Mexico universities can become the bilingual, bicultural professionals we need.
- Remember - Senator Bingaman is already a co-sponsor but still needs to hear from his constituents.
- Sign on to statement of support. If you belong to an organization, please make sure it is an official endorser of the DREAM Act. Read this sign-on statement and list of current endorsers, if you don't see your organization, please email Somos immediately to sign on. We will send the statement to the media and to the Senators’ offices.
- Sign and distribute Somos petition. Get Informed! Read our fact sheet.
Download a petition to help distribute among your friends and members. PDF or Doc
Our goal is to collect 1,000 petitions by early next week.
